MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT HARM THE FINISH.
INTRODUCTION
Generally slate is a soft
material. There are exceptions to that rule with some quartzite which look like
slate but are almost as hard as granite. That means that anything with a higher
hardness (Quarts (found in sand), steel, etc.) will scratch them. Traffic
patterns are mostly caused by dust, dirt, sand, and any other particles that may
be present on the surface of floor during foot traffic. Many of these materials
are permeable (absorbent) depending on their composition and finish and can
easily be stained by different liquids. Acids and Alkalis will react with these
materials and will etch their finishes PREVENTIVE With all this in mind, the three
basic items to remember when caring for a slate floors and walls is: 1.
Keep the floor and walls clean. That will definitely reduce the
wear and tear on it and the need to refinish it. 2.
Do not use harsh chemicals to clean it. 3.
Wipe off spills immediately, so the damage is minimized. DO’s ·
Use sealers recommended by your installer or slate manufacturers
with slate. The use of color enhancing sealers will help hide the dusty look
that sometimes appears with slate, and will also hide traffic patterns if used
regularly. Sealers should be applied by a professional ·
Clean floors frequently with a clean mop, water and detergent,
especially in high traffic areas
·
Use mats at entryways to reduce the amount of dirt tracked in. ·
Clean spills immediately. ·
Seek the help of a professional stone maintenance contractor for
long-term care and maintenance. DON’Ts ·
Do not use abrasive pads or cleaners to clean the floor ·
Do not leave spills overnight even if the floor is sealed. Sealers
do not protect the finish against harsh chemicals. |
